Immediate Emergency Assistance Required
Monsoon Emergency in Pakistan
According to Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Sindh situation reports, Monsoon floods 2024 in Sindh have caused widespread devastation across multiple sectors. 31,543 homes have been damaged, with 23,920 partially and 7,623 fully destroyed, displacing thousands of families. Critical infrastructure, including 293 kilometers of roads and three bridges, has also been damaged, cutting off access to essential services. In the education sector, 1,348 schools have been damaged, affecting 230,976 children and disrupting their access to education. The agricultural sector has suffered immensely, with 329,555 acres of crops destroyed, including major cash crops like cotton, sugarcane, and paddy, leading to a severe food security crisis. Livestock losses have been significant, with 1,135 animals perished, further impacting rural livelihoods. Immediate interventions are needed across these sectors to provide relief and initiate recovery efforts.
Food Assistance/Multipurpose Cash Assistance (MPCA) for Flood-Affected Families
Immediate food aid and MPCA can provide life-saving assistance to families displaced by floods. Cash transfers enable them to purchase essential goods based on their needs, ensuring flexibility while supporting the local economy. Food assistance will be critical for families, especially those who have lost their crops or have limited access to markets due to damaged roads.
Health Camps
The floods have led to an increased risk of waterborne diseases. Setting up health camps will ensure that displaced families, especially children and pregnant women, have access to essential healthcare services. These camps can focus on treating common flood-related illnesses, including diarrheal diseases and skin infections, and provide maternal health services.
WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene)
Floodwaters have contaminated water sources, creating an urgent need for clean water. Water tinkering services can be deployed to provide clean drinking water, while the construction of temporary latrines in camps can help prevent the spread of diseases. This intervention is essential to protect public health in flood-affected areas
Non-Food Items (NFIs) – Dignity Kits, Mosquito Nets, and Hygiene Kits
These kits are crucial for maintaining hygiene and dignity in displaced communities. Dignity kits (which include menstrual hygiene supplies for women), mosquito nets (to prevent malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases), and hygiene kits (containing soap, sanitizers, and other essentials) will provide relief to families living in temporary shelters
Winterization Kits (Warm Clothes for All Ages)
As winter approaches, providing winterization kits containing warm clothing for children, adults, and the elderly will be essential to help families cope with the cold. Many families who have lost their homes are living in makeshift shelters, making them vulnerable to harsh weather conditions.
School Support (Uniforms and Books for Students)
With 1,348 schools damaged, disrupting the education of 230,976 children, there is an immediate need to restore learning activities. Supplying school uniforms and books will enable children to return to school and continue their education, ensuring that the long-term impact on learning is minimized.
Livestock Support (Fodder for Animals)
For families dependent on livestock for their livelihoods, providing fodder for surviving animals is crucial. Many farmers have lost their grazing lands due to the floods, and without fodder, they risk losing their remaining livestock, further worsening their economic situation.
