REBUILDING HOPES IN PAKISTAN
Pakistan has recently experienced catastrophic floods, leaving millions of people devastated and in dire need of support. More than 2 million houses have been affected, with over 767,000 houses destroyed and nearly 1.3 million houses damaged. Sindh, the hardest-hit province, witnessed the destruction of over 683,000 houses and damage to over 1.1 million houses. The floodwaters have also caused significant damage to public infrastructure, including roads and bridges, exacerbating the challenges faced by the affected communities.
Sindh, with a population of 50.4 million people, accounts for 23 percent of the country’s population and generates 27 percent of Pakistan’s GDP. However, nearly half of Sindh’s population resides in rural areas, and around 37 percent of the rural population lives below the poverty line. These vulnerable communities face increased risks due to their geographical location, socioeconomic vulnerability, and climatic conditions.
The Urgent Need For Rebuilding Shelters
Six months after the floods, approximately 1.8 million people are still living near stagnant and contaminated floodwater pools, putting them at risk of diseases. Moreover, nutrition, food security, and public health remain major concerns as many flood-affected individuals reside in temporary shelters, lacking basic food items and facing increased cases of malnutrition. Providing safe and durable shelters is a critical step towards restoring the safety, privacy, health, and dignity of these affected families.
To address this urgent need, we propose the construction of one low-cost single-room shelter, complete with a washroom and kitchen, for a homeless flood-affected widow in District Mirpurkhas. These shelters will serve as a beacon of hope, providing a secure space for the widow and her family to rebuild their lives. The estimated cost for constructing this shelter is £1000.
